Mr. Fenstermacher and the battle of Gettysburg

I never met Mr. Fenstermacher.   I do remember seeing his picture in the local paper once.

When I was in grade school Mr. Fenstermacher was over 100 years old.  He lived only a few blocks down the street from where we lived.

When Mr. Fenstermacher was in his teens he had joined the First Minnesota Regiment, a state guard unit.  They made him a drummer boy.

He drummed for the First Minnesota Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg.  He was actually on the field, part of the battle itself.

One of my greatest regrets is that I never took the opportunity to meet and talk to this man, this part of living history.   Our teachers told us to go visit him, that he was quite willing to talk of his experiences.

But I never went.
